Our History

It was the vision of Dr. N.B. Baroody, Dr. Earl Jones, Dr. Myers Hicks, Dr. Harry S Allen Jr., and Dr. James Owen to begin a free medical clinic founded on Christian principles of love, faith, and compassion to serve the low income and uninsured people of Florence and Williamsburg Counties. On October 25, 1994, Mercy Medicine Free Clinic began seeing medical patients every Tuesday morning at the Manna House. Four years later, the clinic moved to Lighthouse Ministries before moving in 2013 to its current home on 500 South Coit Street. In 2005 under the guidance of Dr. Thad Davis and Charles Greene, Mercy Medicine Free Clinic widened its mission to also cover basic dental services.

After twenty years, Mercy Medicine Free Clinic continues to fulfill the vision of its founders. In 2016, the clinic had 1502 medical visits and 346 dental visits. This would not be possible if it were not for the support from all the wonderful administrative, medical, dental, and spiritual volunteers who gave over two thousand hours in 2016, brilliant partners, and gracious donors.
